Nasser Hussain warned England of challenging times ahead as they face India in a five-match Test series starting on January 25, emphasizing the pivotal role of pitch conditions.

Under the leadership of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England has become a formidable force in red-ball cricket, embracing an aggressive style. They’ve triumphed over New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa and drew 2-2 against Australia in the Ashes 2023. However, the upcoming series against India poses a significant challenge, particularly in spin-friendly conditions where England lacks experience.

Former captain Nasser Hussain cautioned the team about India’s readiness, suggesting that if the pitches favor spin moderately, India could dominate, but if they heavily favor spin, England might have a chance.

“India are waiting. There has been a lot of talk about Indian cricket, and there has been a lot of talk about Bazball, and the two of them are just about to meet. A lot of Indian fans are waiting to see Bazball and put it to bed. If the Indian management asked for good pitches that spin, then I think their spinners and batters will out-spin and out-bat ours. If they ask for pitches that are a bit of lottery, and it turns huge, then I think it brings England’s spinners into it as well,” Hussain said to Sky Sports Cricket.

Hussain also emphasized the crucial role of Joe Root, Ben Duckett, and Ben Stokes in England’s performance on spin-friendly pitches against India. Stressing their proficiency against spin, Hussain highlighted Root as the linchpin. He reminded that the visitors won’t adopt a passive approach, contrasting with their previous strategy.

The former skipper further noted Stokes’ excellence against spin, signaling a more assertive mindset. Drawing from the Pakistan series, where conditions varied, he urged against anticipating a repeat of passive batting, emphasizing the potential for dynamic play on diverse pitches.
