Jamie Smith hit a six to seal England’s five-wicket win as they successfully chased 371, taking a 1-0 lead in the Anderson- Tendulkar series.

England pulled off a remarkable 371-run chase to defeat India by five wickets in the first Test at Headingley, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Jamie Smith finished the game with a six. Ben Duckett led the way with a brilliant 149, while Joe Root remained unbeaten on 53.

Earlier, Zak Crawley scored a fluent 58 to set the tone. India’s bowlers struggled for wickets on a flat pitch. Jasprit Bumrah couldn’t make an impact after lunch, while Ben Duckett and Crawley built a solid platform. Prasidh Krishna broke the stand by dismissing both openers, and Shardul Thakur revived India’s hopes with the wickets of Duckett and Harry Brook.

Rain interrupted play briefly, offering India a chance to regroup, but Root and Ben Stokes absorbed the pressure and took control. Despite the bowling effort in the middle phase, India couldn’t contain England’s chase.

This defeat marks a disappointing start to Shubman Gill’s tenure as Test captain and India’s 2025–27 World Test Championship campaign. England’s chase is one of the highest in their Test history. Notably, this match also is the first time India registered five individual centuries in a single Test match.
