Rob Key revealed that Jofra Archer might return for the T20 World Cup after battling injuries for over a year.
Jofra Archer is a strong contender to return to international cricket for England’s T20 World Cup campaign this June in the West Indies and USA, according to England’s managing director, Rob Key. It came as a welcome relief for the team, as Archer might return after a lengthy period of injuries that have sidelined the fast bowler for over a year.
“Jofra has been out with Sussex in India for pre-season and bowled quickly out there; he bowled really well. He has now gone back to the Caribbean, where he’s going to play a bit of club cricket, all about getting himself ready for that T20 World Cup. He’ll hopefully play the Pakistan series, but it’s always fingers-crossed at the moment with Jofra,” Key told SkySports, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Despite Archer’s potential, Key remains cautious. He highlighted the need for a measured approach. Rushing Archer back could risk further injury setbacks. The plan, therefore, is to prioritise white-ball cricket for him in 2024, ensuring a long-term return to form. “What we’re going to do is take it slower rather than try to go too quickly so that we get him back for not just a short period, but we get him for a long period,” Key pointed out.
The focus is on the T20 World Cup and potentially rejoining the Test squad next summer against India, followed by the Ashes. “The whole plan with Jofra is that he’s going to play white-ball cricket this summer and going into the winter. Then hopefully next summer, when we play India and then onto the Ashes, we get him back for Test cricket. It’s a slow process to get him back in all forms,” concluded Key.
