Matthew Mott’s position as England’s white-ball coach came under scrutiny following the team’s poor performance in recent tournaments, hence, reports of Eoin Morgan becoming the next coach were evident.
Former England captain Eoin Morgan has distanced himself from speculation linking him to the role of white-ball coach. The 36-year-old, who led England to World Cup glory in 2019, is currently enjoying his role as a cricket expert and family life.
Morgan’s comments were particularly a consequence of the growing pressure on current coach Matthew Mott, whose tenure has been marked by disappointing results in major tournaments. England crashed out of the group stage at the 2023 World Cup and suffered a heavy defeat to India in the T20 World Cup semi-final.
While Morgan is considered a potential replacement for Mott, but he has made it clear that he is not interested in the role at this stage of his life. “I’ve been asked a lot over the past couple of months about the role and if I would take it on, and my answer has simply been that the timing for everything in my life at the moment is not right,” Morgan said while speaking to SkySports.
“This news is actually news to me. It’s obviously not nice when a coach comes under fire and there is a lot of speculation about his future, but only time will tell what will happen,” added Morgan.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is conducting a review of the white-ball setup, which could also lead to changes in the captaincy role currently held by Jos Buttler.
Morgan’s comments come just months after he was critical of the team’s performance under Mott during the World Cup. The 2019 World Cup-winning captain has not shied away from expressing his views on the state of English white-ball cricket.
While concluding, the former cricket star shared his intention to coach the team after some time. “Yes, I want to coach down the line, but I have a young family, and I spend a lot more time at home and watching cricket doing this. I’m absolutely loving what I’m doing,” concluded Morgan.
