Sourav Ganguly wants BCCI to address Ishan Kishan’s absence from the Ranji Trophy, emphasizing the importance of domestic cricket participation for all players.
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to address Ishan Kishan’s absence from the Ranji Trophy. Kishan, along with Shreyas Iyer, was recently dropped from the BCCI’s central contracts for skipping Ranji Trophy matches despite specific instructions from the board.
While Iyer has returned to the domestic circuit, participating in the ongoing Ranji Trophy semi-final between Mumbai and Tamil Nadu, Kishan remains unavailable. This has drawn criticism, prompting Ganguly, to speak out.

Ganguly underscored the importance of domestic cricket participation for all players, including those selected for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“For someone like Ishan Kishan, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny and the selectors need to speak to him. All this while he has played Ranji and then played white-ball cricket. Has it made him a poorer player? It hasn’t,” he told The Times of India.
The former Indian skipper also pointed out veteran pacer Ishant Sharma’s participation in the Ranji Trophy.
“All the players picked in Delhi Capitals have played Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy. Even Ishant Sharma has played Ranji,” Ganguly said.
Ganguly’s statement has ignited a debate within the cricketing fraternity, raising concerns about player commitment to domestic tournaments. BCCI’s action could set a precedent and determine the future landscape of player selection and development in Indian cricket.
