Harbhajan Singh endorsed the inclusion of senior cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the T20 World Cup squad, emphasizing that a blend of experienced players and youth would form a balanced team.
As the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, set to be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies, speculations abound regarding potential champions. India stands as a prominent favorite after their close run in the ODI World Cup 2023, where they reached the final but fell short against Australia led by Pat Cummins. Discussions on India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup sparked debates, especially regarding the inclusion of seasoned batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Amidst this discourse, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh lent his support to both players, affirming the necessity of a blend between experienced campaigners and emerging talents for a balanced team.
“I think both Virat and Rohit should be there in the World Cup…I think a good combination would be possible only when you have good senior players too with the youth. Virat and Rohit have a lot of mettle in them…I think they should play,” Harbhajan told to ANI.
Harbhajan also praised the young Indian team in South Africa, suggesting they need time to develop. He stressed the importance of patience, highlighting that judging teams solely on immediate results isn’t fair.
“This is a young team; I think we should give them some time. We are very result-oriented, and our team is good only if they give results. That is not the case. I think that if we give them time, they will obviously learn. We will have to change ourselves a little as we judge teams on results too quickly. Results take time. This team is in the process. South Africa is not an easy place to play, especially for bowlers,” he added.
The former player further analyzed India’s loss in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia, attributing it to India’s subpar performance. Harbhajan added that despite blaming external factors like pitch, dew, and conditions, India’s failure primarily stemmed from their inability to perform well under the high-pressure situation, believing that they could have posted a higher total of 280-290 runs with better execution.
