David Warner, after clinching the Player of the Match Award in Australia’s win over the West Indies, hinted at his retirement from international cricket following the T20 World Cup in June.
Australian opener David Warner’s explosive innings of 70 runs off 36 balls in the first T20I against the West Indies at Hobart earned him the Player of the Match award. Following Australia’s 11-run victory, Warner announced plans for his retirement from T20I cricket during the post-match presentation.
Expressing satisfaction with the win and his performance, he stated his intention to compete in the upcoming T20 World Cup before concluding his international T20 career.
“Pleasing to get the win on the board. Was a nice wicket to bat on and you have to make the most of it. Feel great and refreshed, I’m pumped. I want to play the T20 World Cup and finish there and it’s a good journey we’ve got going for the next 6 months. Pretty much the same squad going to New Zealand so it’s important we win there as well,” said Warner.
Warner, aged 37, recently concluded his Test and ODI careers after the Pakistan series, where he emerged as the third-highest run-getter with 299 runs. His Test career included winning the 2023 World Test Championship.
In ODIs, Warner cliched the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, marking his second win in the tournament. He holds the distinction of winning all three ICC trophies, having claimed the T20 World Cup in 2021. Additionally, he’s Australia’s second-highest T20I run-scorer and shares the honor of 100 international appearances across T20Is, ODIs, and Tests with Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor.
Should Australia clinch the T20 World Cup, Warner could retire as a global champion in all formats.
