Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten stated that the cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan is unmatched, with passionate fans on both sides, and he considers it a privilege to be part of such a significant match.

Former World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten will be in the opposition dugout as India faces Pakistan on Sunday, June 9, at Nassau County International Stadium in New York. Pakistan, coming off a surprising loss to co-hosts USA, will be under pressure to perform.

Ahead of the match, Kirsten noted the similar passion for cricket in Pakistan as in India and highlighted that the India-Pakistan rivalry is unmatched in the sport. He expressed his excitement about being part of such significant games, especially with the historic first India-Pakistan clash in America.

“It’s great to be part of, I certainly see it as a massive privilege to be part of these games. I’ve had, I think, two of them. So, it’s great to be involved in this. Cricket doesn’t get bigger than this. So, it’s fun to be a part of. I think it’s going to be a great occasion tomorrow,” Kirsten said.

“First kind of India-Pakistan game in America. It’s been great being here in America on tour. I think it’s one of the privileges of being involved in cricket for all of us, is that we get to travel the world in the name of cricket and see different places. So that’ll be fun and a great occasion,” he added.

Pakistan’s opening match of the tournament ended in a narrow five-run defeat to co-hosts USA in a Super Over. Despite the loss, Kirsten urged his squad to focus on the present. He underlined the need to play their best cricket and put pressure on India in their upcoming match.

“We can’t keep harping on history. Our focus now needs to be on playing the best cricket we can. Tomorrow, we’ll go out there and utilize our skills to put pressure on India. That’s our approach for every game,” the coach said.

Kirsten also acknowledged the natural motivation of facing India and stressed the importance of executing their game plan.

“There’s no need for me to motivate the boys any further. They’re fired up and ready. We simply need to forget the past two days and move forward. Focusing on results is beyond our control. What we can control is our preparation, our attitude, and executing our skills to the best of our ability,” he added.

India, having played a warm-up and a group-stage match in Nassau County, may find conditions challenging. Pakistan needs a win to enhance their chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage, with the USA already winning two matches and potentially joining India in the next round if they defeat Pakistan.
