In a recent interview, Gautam Gambhir commended MS Dhoni’s unparalleled legacy as India’s most successful cricket captain.
Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders, recently reminisced about his intense battles with MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings throughout their careers. The two iconic figures clashed on numerous memorable occasions, including the 2012 IPL final.
In a candid interview on Star Sports ahead of KKR’s clash with CSK, Gambhir emphasised his desire to win. “I want to win. I am very clear in my mind. There are people, yes. Friendship, mutual respect—everything is different. Everything will always remain, but then, when you are in the middle, I am captaining KKR, he is captaining CSK, and if you ask him if he were here instead of me, he will also say the same answer: it’s about winning. I want to get back in a winning dressing room,” said Gambhir, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
Besides the match, Gambhir also acknowledged Dhoni’s monumental achievements and lauded him. While Dhoni stepped down from captaincy before the 2024 season, his legacy remains unparalleled, boasting three ICC trophies for India and five IPL titles for CSK. “MS is probably the most successful captain India will ever have. I don’t think anyone can ever reach that level, winning three ICC trophies. People can win overseas; people can win as many Test matches, but it cannot get bigger than three ICC trophies,” Gambhir commented.
Gambhir then commended Dhoni’s tactical mindset and indomitable spirit that drove him to so many titles. “In the IPL, I enjoyed every bit of it because I knew that MS had that tactical mindset. He would never give up…even if he needed 20 runs in one over,” concluded the KKR coach.
Gambhir and Dhoni will again face each other with their teams, though in different roles, on April 8th at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
