Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal supported Gautam Gambhir’s candidacy for India’s next head coach.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has expressed strong support for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor and World Cup-winning batter Gautam Gambhir to become India’s next head coach. Reports indicated that Gambhir was interviewed by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for the position on Tuesday, June 18.
Akmal, speaking to the Times of India, praised Gambhir highly and endorsed him as the ideal candidate for the role. Akmal stated, “Whatever Gambhir touches turns into gold. The team he joins becomes successful. Team India doesn’t need any foreign coaches. They have plenty of options and talent. After Dravid, no one can be the best and bigger than Gautam Gambhir. He was a big player and will become a great coach too. He is the best option India have right now.”
Akmal further highlighted Gambhir’s success with other teams. “Gambhir was with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and they did really well under him. He became a mentor of KKR and they became champions. He is an amazing planner and has a brilliant cricketing mind. I have played a lot of cricket with him. We have been together for a long time. We played, had food and had chats together. We are still good friends. We are still in touch. He should be the head coach and India can go for Ashish Nehra or Zaheer Khan as bowling coach,” concluded Akmal.

With current head coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure set to end after the ongoing T20 World Cup, Gambhir appears to be the leading candidate for the position. The Indian team is preparing to compete in the Super Eights of the tournament, beginning with a match against Afghanistan on Thursday, June 20.
Besides Gambhir, Akmal also lauded Rahul Dravid’s immense impact on Indian cricket, both on and off the field. Dravid’s coaching has been impressive, guiding India to major tournament finals. His successful tenure led to a contract extension until the ongoing T20 World Cup.
