Court declines stay request For Gautam Gambhir

The Delhi High Court on Monday refused to halt trial court proceedings against former Indian cricketer and current head coach Gautam Gambhir in a case linked to the alleged illegal stocking and distribution of Covid-19 medicines. The allegations also involve Gambhir’s foundation and family members.
A plea had been filed to quash the FIR against Gambhir, but Justice Neena Bansal Krishna refused to grant immediate relief, asserting that the court would still hear the request.
“Had you made a simple request, I would have considered it. You are trying to tell me so many things. Firstly, the name (of the party), his credentials, the work done by him. You are trying name-dropping as if it will work in the court. It does not work,” the judge remarked, as quoted by The Times of India.

The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for September 8. It was noted that Gambhir, a former Member of Parliament, had donated oxygen cylinders and medicines during the lockdown. However, the court did not change its stance. The HC also observed that once a stay order is granted, hearings and investigations stop, and the case gets “eventually dismissed.”
The complaint was originally filed by the Drug Control Department (DCD) against Gambhir, the Gautam Gambhir Foundation, and its CEO Aprajita Singh. His mother Seema Gambhir and wife Natasha Gambhir were also named as accused under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
On the cricketing front, Gambhir will now turn his attention to India’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign. The Men in Blue are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Oman, and hosts United Arab Emirates. India enter the tournament after a hard-fought 2-2 Test series draw in England.
