According to a News18 report, former India opener Gautam Gambhir and ex-cricketer WV Raman were interviewed by BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee for the head coach role.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir is a frontrunner for the head coach position, but he was not the only candidate interviewed by the BCCI on Tuesday. As the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Gambhir led the team to their third IPL title, boosting his chances for the role. With current head coach Rahul Dravid stepping down after the T20 World Cup 2024, Gambhir was expected to be the primary applicant.
However, according to a News18 report, the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) also interviewed former cricketer WV Raman for the job. While Raman’s presentation was reportedly impressive, the CAC plans to meet with an overseas candidate on Wednesday. Gambhir attended the interview virtually from his residence.
“Gambhir had a virtual interview but Raman’s presentation was very impressive and detailed. The CAC is likely to interview an overseas candidate tomorrow. Gambhir has the edge but Raman’s presentation was very thorough,” News18 quoted a BCCI official as saying.
“Yes, the head coach has a big say in these appointments because he would want people he is comfortable working with. Having said that, it’s not that straightforward and BCCI too can propose their own candidates or people they think are ideal for the job. Ultimately it will be Gautam Gambhir, who is likely to become the coach, who would decide his team,” the source added.

Reports from News18 also indicated that the BCCI has reached out to candidates for the selector position advertised in January, with interviews scheduled soon. The new selector, likely from the North Zone, will probably replace Salil Ankola. Applicants include Kishan Mohan, Nikhil Chopra, Mithun Manhas, and Reetinder Singh Sodhi, with Manhas and Sodhi emerging as frontrunners for the senior selection committee.
