Sunil Gavaskar praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership after India’s T20 World Cup win, comparing him to Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.
Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar showered praise on Rohit Sharma after the Indian skipper guided the team to their first ICC title in 11 years. India defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final by seven runs, ending a long wait for silverware.
The 37-year-old batter was in top form throughout the tournament, scoring 257 runs in eight matches with three crucial half-centuries. Gavaskar, impressed by Rohit’s leadership, compared him to iconic captains Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.
“Rohit Sharma joins the ranks of cricketing giants Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni by leading India to a World Cup trophy. Just like them, Rohit is also a people’s captain,” Gavaskar wrote in his Sunday column for Mid-day
Gavaskar elaborated, “Rohit is not only well-liked by his teammates but by the entire Indian cricket fraternity. Fans admire his calm leadership style, and tactically, he’s as sharp as anyone in the game. Some of his decisions might be surprising at first glance, but they often turn out to be exactly what the team needed.”

Rohit’s captaincy stint also saw him achieve some personal milestones. He became the first captain to win 50 T20I matches and the first to lead a team to a T20 World Cup title with a perfect win record. “He led by example. He prioritized team success over personal achievements and consistently provided strong starts for the team. India is fortunate to have him as their captain,” Gavaskar added.
Gavaskar also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid. “While the players rightly received most of the attention, the support staff, led by the exceptional Rahul Dravid, played a crucial role in this victory. The combination of Rohit and Dravid was truly remarkable – both completely team-oriented, selfless, and dedicated to Team India’s success,” concluded the former cricketer.
