Glenn Maxwell continued to grapple with a leg injury from 2022, affecting his cricket performance despite ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell continues to deal with the effects of a severe leg injury he sustained in 2022. Maxwell suffered the injury during a friend’s birthday celebration, which has impacted his ability to play cricket comfortably. Despite this setback, Maxwell remains dedicated to his recovery, undergoing intensive rehabilitation and specialised training daily.
Maxwell’s injuries included a cracked fibula, a chipped tibia, and torn ankle ligaments in his left leg, all of which occurred shortly after Australia’s ICC T20 World Cup campaign ended in the league stage. As a result of these injuries, he missed the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India. However, he still secured a place in the victorious ODI World Cup squad, where he delivered a remarkable performance by scoring 201* off 128 balls, including ten sixes, against Afghanistan.
Maxwell has openly discussed his ongoing struggle with the injury, stating, “It’s still my leg. It’s what is giving me the most grief since breaking it, so it’s still a work in progress.” He emphasised the importance of consistent effort to keep his leg pain-free for a full day of cricket. His rehabilitation process involves extensive gym work and strengthening various body parts to prevent minor injuries that could hinder his recovery.

When asked whether his performance in the Sheffield Shield would impact his selection for the series against Sri Lanka, Maxwell commented, “It would be great if I could get my body into a position where I can play over (in Sri Lanka). But as far as Shield cricket, I’m not sure how much they’ll take that into consideration.”
The 35-year-old has represented Australia in just seven Test matches, scoring 334 runs at an average of 26.07, with a highest score of 104 and one century to his name. Maxwell has not played a single Test match on home soil, having featured in six away matches, where he scored 298 runs at an average of 27.09. As a bowler, he has taken eight wickets in his seven Test appearances, with an average of 42.62.
