Glenn Maxwell acknowledged the impact of his recent “drunken incident,” admitting it affected his family more than himself and shed light on his commitment to recovery.
Australia’s star all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, reflected on the repercussions of the recent ‘drunken incident,’ acknowledging that it may have had a greater impact on his family than on himself. The incident occurred in late January during a late-night gathering in Adelaide, leading to Maxwell’s hospitalization before the T20I series against the West Indies. Despite the setback, Maxwell delivered an outstanding performance, smashing an unbeaten 120 off just 55 balls in the second T20I, securing victory for Australia and sealing the series.
In his comments to The West Australian, Maxwell admitted the timing of the incident was less than ideal, emphasizing his focus on recovery and readiness for upcoming matches, including the T20 World Cup.
“I think probably it affected my family a little bit more than it affected me. I knew I had that week off. And obviously, that incident was less than ideal, and the timing. But I had that week off, I knew I had that week off away from the game,” Maxwell said.
“And I came back and got back into my running, my gym program and it felt really good and refreshed once I got back. And it’s all been focused on getting myself ready for this (T20) series and what’s to come. We know we have got four international games until the (T20) World Cup and how it comes around pretty quick. And I just try to make sure I’m in as good a space that I can be for that tournament,” he added.
Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, previously addressed Glenn Maxwell’s drinking incident, emphasizing Maxwell’s need to fulfill his responsibilities. Despite this, Maxwell also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from McDonald, chairman of selectors George Bailey, and the support staff.
Maxwell’s sentiments followed his exceptional performance, where he smashed a century off just 50 balls, guiding Australia to a commanding total of 241/4 against the West Indies. Notably, this century marked Maxwell’s fifth in T20I cricket, putting him on par with Rohit Sharma.
