Maxwell Opens Up on Not Being Retained
Glenn Maxwell expressed understanding of RCB’s decision to release him, appreciating the transparent communication from the team.
In a surprising move, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) chose not to retain Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. RCB, which retained Virat Kohli (INR 21 Crore), Rajat Patidar (INR 11 Crore), and Yash Dayal (INR 5 Crore) using a total of INR 37 Crore, now holds an auction purse of INR 83 Crore and three Right to Match (RTM) cards to strengthen their squad.
Maxwell, a consistent figure in the RCB lineup since 2021, spoke about the way the franchise conveyed its decision, expressing his appreciation for the transparency shown by RCB officials. “I got a phone call from Mo Bobat and Andy Flower. I sat there on a Zoom call, and they sort of explained to me the decision not to be retained. And it was actually a really beautiful exit meeting, if that could be possible. We ended up talking about the game for about half an hour and discussing their strategy and what they were looking to get to do, going forward. So, I was really happy with that,” Maxwell shared on ESPNcricinfo’s Around the Wicket show.

Maxwell Might Be Bought Back by RCB
Reflecting on the franchise’s future plans, Maxwell stated he understood the shift in direction and hinted that he may still return to RCB. “They were obviously changing a few of their staff as well, so they needed to get that sorted before they started talking to players. I understood that process was going to take a bit of time. I wouldn’t say my RCB journey’s over… I’d certainly love to get back there. It was a great franchise to play for and I really enjoyed my time there,” he explained.

Maxwell’s last season was far from ideal, as he scored only 52 runs from nine innings at an average of 5.77, with his highest score being 28. However, he made a moderate impact with the ball, taking six wickets at an average of 21.50 and an economy of 8.06. Despite this performance, Maxwell remains a highly sought-after all-rounder, expected to attract significant interest in the 2025 mega auction.
