Glenn Maxwell expressed hope of contributing to Australia’s current World Test Championship cycle, optimistic about his potential role during future sub-continent tours.
Glenn Maxwell, fresh from his achievements in the World Cup, is aiming for a return to Test cricket with the Australian team, despite having participated in only seven Tests, the last being in 2017. Having secured 339 runs at an average of 26.07 and taken eight wickets with his off breaks, Maxwell admitted the competition for spots in the current Test side is tough. However, he sees himself as a potential asset, especially during subcontinent tours.
“I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side,” Maxwell said on Australian radio station SEN.
Amid discussions about David Warner’s potential retirement and the stir created by Mitchell Johnson’s critique regarding Warner’s hero’s send-off, Maxwell has chosen not to comment on the controversy. Preferring to stay away from creating headlines, he praised Warner as an exceptional player in Australian cricket.

Maxwell, looking ahead, aims to secure a spot in Australia’s 2025 tour to Sri Lanka for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, considering it as a potential opportunity for his Test comeback.
“I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage,” he added.
