Mayank Yadav, despite receiving high praise and being touted as a potential selection for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, maintains a grounded perspective.
Mayank Yadav, the young fast bowler for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has been making waves in IPL 2024 with consecutive Player of the Match awards. Yadav impressed with figures of 3/14 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and followed it up with a three-wicket haul against Punjab Kings in his IPL debut, making him the first player to achieve this feat.
Cricket pundits have lauded the 21-year-old’s performances, suggesting he could be a contender for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. However, Yadav remains grounded, expressing surprise at the attention and stating he harbors no such lofty expectations.
In an interview with CNN-News18, he reflected on his journey, expressing gratitude for the recognition and the opportunity to showcase his talent.
“I have said this a lot of times that since childhood [I was waiting] when will I be able to showcase my ability. And I never expected that I’d get such a good response. I never thought about it, but I feel very good,” Yadav said.
“I have one goal and that is to play for the country, and I want to serve as long as I can for my country. For now, I have no expectations of what will happen after the IPL; and there are people talking about the T20 World Cup and other series, but I have no such big expectations,” he added.
Yadav has left a mark in IPL history by unleashing one of the fastest deliveries ever recorded in the league, setting a new benchmark for deliveries exceeding 155 kmph. In his recent clash against RCB, the 21-year-old speedster thundered a ball at 156.7 kmph, eclipsing his previous record of 155.8 kmph against PBKS. Yadav attributed his ability to generate such pace to his innate talent, supplemented by relentless hard work and invaluable support from mentors.
Looking ahead, Yadav expressed his ambition to further amplify his bowling speed, underscoring his determination to dominate opponents.
“I do not like if someone hits me for boundaries. My goal is, how big a batter it may be, I want to dominate them. And it’s not just now, it’s been like that since my childhood. I like creating pressure and I want to dominate every single time,” Yadav concluded.
