Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been banned for one match and fined Rs 30 lakh for his team’s third over-rate offense of IPL 2024, following their 10th defeat and bottom finish.

Mumbai Indians’ captain, Hardik Pandya, faced a setback in IPL 2024 as his team suffered a 10th defeat due to an over-rate offense. Following MI’s slow over-rate against Lucknow Super Giants, Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh and barred from the next match, marking the team’s third such violation this season.

The IPL’s Code of Conduct imposed fines on other MI players too; the playing XI members, including the Impact Player, were individually fined Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever was lower. This disciplinary action came after LSG triumphed over MI by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.

“As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 30 lakh and banned from playing the team’s next match. The rest of the members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either Rs.12 lakh or 50 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the official statement read.

Pandya thus became the second player suspended for one match due to an over-rate offense. Previously, Delhi Capitals’ captain Rishabh Pant faced a similar penalty, missing a crucial match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the third over-rate violation.

Since MI’s game against LSG concluded their IPL 2024 season, Pandya is set to miss the next season’s opener as part of the penalty.

On the match front, Nicholas Pooran’s explosive 28-ball 75 propelled Lucknow Super Giants to a strong total before they defeated Mumbai Indians by 18 runs after a 45-minute rain break. Pooran smashed eight sixes, achieving a 19-ball half-century and becoming the highest six-hitter (36) in IPL 2024, lifting LSG from 69/3 in 10 overs to over 200.

Despite half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir, Mumbai Indians finished with just eight points from 14 matches, placing them last in the standings for the second time in three years. LSG ended with 14 points but missed the playoffs due to a few key losses.
