After Mumbai Indians’ 10th defeat of IPL 2024, captain Hardik Pandya admitted that the team failed to play quality cricket throughout the season, leading to their disappointing last-place finish.
After Mumbai Indians’ (MI) 18-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL 2024 at Wankhede Stadium, skipper Hardik Pandya expressed disappointment in his team’s performance. Chasing a target of 216, Hardik contributed 16 runs off 13 balls.
Speaking after the match, Pandya admitted that MI did not play quality cricket throughout the season, which ultimately led to their downfall. He mentioned that it’s still too early to pinpoint exactly what went wrong but acknowledged that the entire season was subpar.
“Quite difficult, this season we didn’t play good quality cricket and it cost us the whole season. It’s a professional world, sometimes there’ll be good and sometimes bad days. As a group, we didn’t play quality and smart cricket and it showed in the results. Too early to exactly point out what went wrong tonight. The whole season kind of went wrong. We can pass on this game and look forward to the next season,” Hardik said.

On the match front, after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians (MI) opted to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), but the decision backfired. KL Rahul scored a solid 55 off 41 balls with three fours and three sixes, while Nicholas Pooran blasted 75 off just 29 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes. Contributions from Marcus Stoinis (28 off 22) and Ayush Badoni (22* off 10) helped LSG reach an imposing 214/6.
Piyush Chawla was the standout bowler for MI, taking three wickets in his four-over spell. However, MI’s efforts fell short, leading to a challenging target.
Chasing 216 against Lucknow Super Giants in their final match, MI fell short at 196/6, losing by 18 runs. Despite a strong start from Rohit Sharma, who scored 68 off 38 balls, and a promising half-century from Naman Dhir, MI couldn’t maintain their momentum. The middle-order collapse sealed their fate, marking the second time in three seasons they finished last.
