Harry Brook
Stuart Broad praised Harry Brook, comparing him to Joe Root and highlighting his impressive performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Former England pacer Stuart Broad has lauded Harry Brook, likening him to Joe Root and referring to him as “the new Joe Root.” Broad drew parallels between the young batter and England’s modern-day great, emphasizing their technical similarities. He highlighted Brook’s ability to dominate the off-stump line, showcasing power and precision like Kevin Pietersen, but with the calmness and consistency of Root.

Broad’s praise came at stumps on Day 2 of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka, where he acknowledged Brook’s crucial role with the bat. “We had a really good summer when he came around the whole Test summer with us. I remember a net session with Harry, and he had that amazing ability to hit that off-stump line through straight mid-wicket really powerfully, a bit like Kevin Pietersen. He stands up tall and hits well,” Broad told Sky Sports.

He continued, “Jimmy and I played with him at Yorkshire, and we walked out of the presser thinking he’s the next Root. When he came into the Test side, he doesn’t overcomplicate anything.” Brook’s performance on Day 2 against Sri Lanka further validated Broad’s comparison. Walking in at a precarious 67/3, Brook displayed his skills by scoring a crucial 56 runs off 73 balls, stabilizing England’s innings after the loss of early wickets.

Brook first shared a 58-run partnership with Joe Root, who was dismissed for 42 by Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando. After Root’s departure, Brook continued to hold the innings together, forming a 52-run stand with Jamie Smith. His innings was a blend of solid defense and aggressive stroke play, particularly against the spinners.

However, Brook’s promising innings was cut short just before tea when Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed him, leaving England at 187/5. Despite his dismissal, Brook’s contribution was key in giving England a fighting chance on a challenging day.
