Former Australian batter Mark Waugh opined that Marnus Labuschagne’s recent struggles might stem from his intense focus on the game.
According to former Australian batter Mark Waugh, Marnus Labuschagne is “going through a rut”. The 29-year-old has managed just one century and six half-centuries in 17 Tests since the beginning of 2023, a stark contrast to his sensational start. His recent form has been particularly concerning, with only 22 runs in his last three Tests at a dismal average of 4.40.
Mark Waugh believes Labuschagne’s intense focus on the game might be hindering him. “He’s so intense. He’s 24 hours a day – eats, sleeps and drinks cricket,” Waugh told Fox Cricket.
“And I wonder when you get in a bit of a rut, is that going to suffocate you? He was in there with his tracksuit on, he had a backpack on and he had his bat and he was shadow batting in the department store. He needs to break free of that,” Waugh noted, suggesting it might be counterproductive.
Despite his struggles, the right-handed batter has maintained good stats in red-ball cricket with over 4,000 runs. Waugh acknowledged Labuschagne’s previous achievements, stating, “He’s got a few credits in the bank, let’s be fair. He’s a fantastic player. He’s going through a rut.”
“If he can just forget about batting 24 hours a day and have a bit of luck. He’s had no luck recently, he’s getting caught down the leg side, he’s making one mistake and he’s getting out. So, it might be as simple as having a bit of luck in the next dig and he’ll be fine,” he added.
As the series finale against New Zealand looms in Christchurch, Marnus Labuschagne gears up to mark a significant milestone in his career – his 50th Test appearance. Despite facing challenges and experiencing ups and downs, selectors have consistently backed Labuschagne. Waugh also echoed this sentiment, expressing his belief that the selectors will continue to show faith in Labuschagne as he approaches this milestone.
