‘I Remained Passionate About Playing for Mumbai’: Sachin Tendulkar Advocates Domestic Cricket’s Vital Role

Sachin Tendulkar underscored the importance of the Ranji Trophy and domestic cricket development on X(Twitter) amidst recent controversies.

Sachin Tendulkar, the iconic cricketer, emphasized the significance of the Ranji Trophy amidst recent controversies surrounding Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from central contracts. Besides, Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag, the ‘Little Master’, aged 50, shared his sentiments on Twitter on March 5, highlighting his commitment to playing for the domestic circuit whenever possible.

“Throughout my career, I remained passionate about playing for Mumbai whenever I had the opportunity. Growing up, we had almost 7-8 India players in our dressing room, and it was fun to play alongside them,” Tendulkar shared on his ‘X’ handle.

The right-handed batter reminisced about the time when top Indian players used to participate in domestic matches enhancing the overall quality of play and providing invaluable mentorship to youngsters.

“When Indian players turn up for their domestic teams, it raises the quality of play for youngsters and sometimes new talent is identified. It also gives the national players a chance to sometimes rediscover the basics,” he added.

Tendulkar further spoke about the importance of the red-ball format in nurturing players’ skills, particularly for international cricketers who might need to rediscover their basics.

“Sometimes, international cricketers lose their touch, and the red-ball format is the best opportunity for them to rediscover the basics,” he noted.

The cricket legend also lauded the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its focus on domestic cricket, appreciating the equal priority given to tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.

“With top-notch players participating in domestic tournaments, over time, fans will also start following and supporting their domestic teams much more. Wonderful to see @BCCI give equal priority to domestic cricket,” Tendulkar concluded.
