The ICC acknowledged concerns about uneven bounce and player safety on the Nassau County Stadium pitches, promising improvements before the India-Pakistan match.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has acknowledged concerns regarding the pitches at Nassau County Stadium in New York, used for the ongoing T20 World Cup. The pitches have been heavily criticised for their uneven bounce and bowler-friendliness, raising questions about player safety.

In a statement released on Thursday, June 6th, the ICC admitted that the surfaces haven’t played as consistently as expected. “T20 Inc. and the ICC recognise that the pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted. The world-class grounds team has been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday’s game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches,” the statement read.

This admission came after both the India vs. Ireland and Sri Lanka vs. South Africa matches witnessed bowlers dominating the proceedings. Deliveries from fast bowlers like Anrich Nortje (South Africa) and India’s pace attack displayed significant bounce, causing discomfort and danger to the batters.

The hazardous nature of the pitch was further highlighted by injuries to prominent players. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was forced to leave the field after being struck on the shoulder during the India vs. Ireland match. This incident, along with Rishabh Pant’s elbow injury sustained later in the inning, raised serious concerns about player safety.

The stadium uses drop-in pitches, a type of surface requiring time to settle. Commentator Ravi Shastri shared this, mentioning promises of improvement from curators over time. However, the current state has resulted in the pitch being labelled “tricky” throughout the matches played so far.

The ICC has assured that efforts are underway to rectify the situation. This improvement is particularly crucial considering the upcoming high-profile clash between India and Pakistan scheduled for June 9th, Sunday.
