The ICC made a historic announcement by introducing equal prize money for both the men’s and women’s T20 World Cup for the first time.
In a significant move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024 will offer the same prize money as the men’s tournament held earlier this year.
This move marks the first time in international cricket history that both men’s and women’s tournaments will have equal prize money, as confirmed by the ICC in a recent media release. Notably, ICC made cricket the first major team sport to offer equal prize money for its global tournaments.
ICC Announces 7.96 Million USD Prize Pool For Women’s T20 World Cup
As per the new structure, the winners of the Women’s T20 World Cup will receive a prize of USD 2.34 million, a substantial 134% increase from the USD 1 million awarded to Australia for their victory in the 2023 edition. Similarly, the runners-up will be awarded USD 1.17 million, also reflecting a 134% increase from the USD 500,000 South Africa received in the previous tournament.
The two losing semi-finalists will each earn USD 675,000, a marked increase from the USD 210,000 provided in 2023. The overall prize pool has been expanded significantly to USD 7.96 million, representing a 225% increase from the previous year’s total of USD 2.45 million. Teams will also earn USD 31,154 for each win in the group stages, and those who do not reach the semi-finals will share a pool of USD 1.35 million, with the amount distributed according to their group stage standings.
