The ICC will hold its annual meeting in Colombo to discuss the T20 World Cup and potentially appoint a new chairman with a longer term limit.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Colombo, Sri Lanka, as the venue for its annual conference. While specific dates have not been confirmed, it is expected to be held in the third week of July, shortly following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup hosted jointly by the USA and West Indies in June.
This timing is significant, allowing ICC leadership to directly address challenges encountered during the World Cup, particularly in the USA. The American market presents a unique set of hurdles for cricket administrators, and the annual conference is likely to see a critical decision regarding USA Cricket’s future.
Another major point of discussion could be a proposed change to the ICC chairman’s term length. As reported earlier by Cricbuzz, there is a potential shift from the current two-year term to three years, with a corresponding reduction in the number of permissible terms from three to two. However, the most anticipated outcome might be news regarding the next chairman.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah has emerged as a potential candidate, with sources suggesting he may be considering the position. However, Shah himself has remained tight-lipped, leaving the race wide open. Currently, the chairman’s role is held by Greg Barclay of New Zealand.
Meanwhile, the ICC is confident about completing the construction of the “cutting-edge and modular Nassau County International Cricket Stadium” in time for the World Cup. This venue in Eisenhower Park is 30 miles east of Manhattan and can accommodate up to 34,000 people. It will stage eight matches, including the highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan on June 9th.
