According to reports from Cricbuzz, the BCCI is reconsidering the Impact Player and two bouncers per over rules from last season, with their continuation in the SMAT and IPL 2025 uncertain.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly reconsidering two key playing conditions introduced in the last domestic season: the Impact Player rule and the two bouncers per over rule. These rules were initially implemented in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and later carried over to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
While the cricketing community largely welcomed the second bouncer rule, especially during the IPL, the BCCI is now reviewing its effectiveness. The final decision on whether to continue these rules will be crucial, as it could directly influence their use in the upcoming SMAT and potentially in the next IPL season.
“We understand that Impact Player and two bouncer rules are the key points and no decision has been taken. The decision on whether to include these rules in the SMAT will impact their continuation in the IPL,” Cricbuzz quoted an official of a state unit as saying.
Notably, the BCCI has yet to release the playing conditions for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), despite promising to do so over three weeks ago. The delay has raised concerns, especially as the SMAT is set to begin in November.
Meanwhile, the Impact Player rule remains a controversial issue within the cricket community, sparking a divide in opinions. While some, like former cricketer Zaheer Khan, have voiced their support for the rule, believing it provides opportunities for uncapped Indian talent, others, including several players and coaches, have expressed reservations. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently addressed the matter, stating that a decision on the rule’s future will be made soon and communicated to the public.
