Pat Cummins expressed confidence that his mother, who played a significant role in shaping him, would have felt immense pride in Australia’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 win.
During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, Pat Cummins tragically lost his mother, Maria, to breast cancer. Departing after India’s second Test match, he stayed by her side in palliative care. Despite professional success, this year proved bittersweet for Cummins.
England’s fan collective, The Barmy Army even shared a touching video of a fan playing ‘Maria’ from West Side Story, which Cummins showed to his mother. Speaking to ABC News, Cummins shared how delighted his mother was when seeing the video and expressed gratitude for the enduring love and respect displayed by their arch-rivals.
“She loved it. Cricket’s been a big part of our family forever, and to see the respect and love shown from our oldest rivals, it was really special,” he said.

“Mum and dad were always trying to remind us how lucky we are to live in this country and have all the opportunities that we have, but also how we’re just one small, little part of a very big world – and make sure we open our eyes,” he added.
Reflecting on leading Australia to victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Cummins also expressed a profound sense of his mother’s absence, believing she would have taken immense pride in his achievement.
“I think about her every day – she’s seen a lot of successes before this year and she’s a huge part of who I am, and I’m sure she would have been really proud,” the skipper concluded.
