R. Ashwin lauded Shreyas Iyer’s exceptional growth as a batsman, highlighting his pursuit of excellence and foreseeing him as a future champion batter for India, especially in the No. 4 position in ODIs.
Ravichandran Ashwin, discussing Shreyas Iyer’s potential on his YouTube channel, praised the batsman despite Iyer’s rocky start in the World Cup. Initially facing criticism after a duck and inconsistent performances, doubts arose regarding his adaptability against short deliveries, urging for alternative options in the team.
However, Iyer silenced his critics by staging a remarkable comeback in the following five games. His resilience shone through with two half-centuries and a phenomenal unbeaten 128 runs off 94 balls against Netherlands, showcasing his solidity in the team with a rapid 105 off 70 balls.
“Batting against spin and taking them down is Shreyas’ specialty and he is a standout performer. Chasing excellence is a rare commodity in sports. If somebody does something unique, people, instead of appreciating it, tell them not to do it,” Ashwin said.
Initially criticized for his technique against short-pitched deliveries, Iyer defied doubts with his remarkable century, silencing his critics. Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted Iyer’s dedication to improving his skills, particularly his mastery of the pull shot, despite occasional dismissals, acknowledging the numerous boundaries he secured with the shot, and emphasizing Iyer’s pursuit of excellence.
“What I love about Shreyas is that he chases excellence, he took a note to master the pull shot and worked on it. He got out on it but look at the number of balls he put away to the boundary? “Balls were sent to the midwicket region and behind square, which shows he is ready for that ball. He hit fast bowlers above mid-off, definitely the sign of a champion batter developing for India,” Ashwin added.
