The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are reportedly set to meet on January 11 to finalize the squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The deadline for squad announcements is January 12, but the final squad may change until February 13. This provisional squad allows flexibility, especially in managing player injuries.
According to reports from The Hindustan Times, Jasprit Bumrah, who is currently recovering from back spasms, could still be included in the provisional squad. The selectors can later make a replacement if necessary. With the recent pressure on India’s white-ball performance, including a 3-1 Test loss to Australia, the management aims to ensure Bumrah’s fitness for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE.
“Bumrah is a treasure and he should be handled with care. A CT is not the end of the world. If there is the slightest doubt, he shouldn’t be in the squad. Five back-to-back Test matches isn’t something he has ever played in his cricketing career,” a former India trainer Ramaji Srinivasan was earlier quoted as saying by TOI.
Rohit Sharma is expected to lead India in the 2025 Champions Trophy unless the selectors make a significant change following the Australia Test series. The team management will also decide whether Shubman Gill will remain as vice-captain or if Jasprit Bumrah will take on the role. Hardik Pandya served as Rohit’s deputy during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Additionally, selectors are closely monitoring the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, where some players for the Champions Trophy squad are showcasing their form. This tournament could influence final squad decisions.
