Aakash Chopra admitted that he wasn’t overly surprised by Sarfaraz Khan’s exclusion from IPL 2024 contracts, drawing attention to the cricketer’s lack of recent noteworthy performances despite his extensive tenure in the league. Chopra likened this situation to the unexpectedly high price Pat Cummins received in the auction.
He emphasized the significance of recency bias in such decisions, suggesting that if the auction had occurred later, Sarfaraz might have secured a contract.
“I am personally not that surprised, or I would say that I am as surprised as I am with the fact that Pat Cummins got 20.50 crore rupees. Recency bias is a very important thing. If the auction had been tomorrow, he would have got a contract,” Chopra said when speaking on Colors Cineplex.
The cricketer-turned-commentator also opined that auction selections should be based on players’ performances in the past five to seven years.
“However, the auction should be dependent on how you have played in the last five to seven years in that format and in that tournament. Sarfaraz had a contract since he was 18 years old. He has played for two or three franchises,” he added.
Sarfaraz boasts 585 runs in 50 IPL games, with a decent average of 22.50 and a striking rate of 130.58. However, his form took a dip during IPL 2023 with only 53 runs in four innings for Delhi Capitals.
Despite the initial oversight, Sarfaraz’s recent performance resurgence has brought him back into the spotlight, akin to Cummins’s pre-auction buzz. While some franchises are now reportedly showing interest in him for IPL 2024, he might serve as an injury replacement, indicating a potential redemption opportunity for the Mumbai batter.
