Delhi Capitals secured their maiden victory of the IPL 2024 season with an exceptional bowling display, while Chennai Super Kings suffered their first defeat in the tournament.
Delhi Capitals set a formidable total of 191 runs and made an impressive start with the ball, led by Khaleel Ahmed and Ishant Sharma’s disciplined bowling, with Khaleel claiming crucial wickets. Despite a middle-order partnership, Mukesh Kumar’s three early wickets put Delhi in a commanding position. While Anrich Nortje faced some late-over struggles, Chennai Super King’s late surge wasn’t enough to clinch victory.
Earlier, Rishabh Pant’s decision to bat first proved wise as David Warner and Prithvi Shaw’s explosive start propelled Delhi. Despite Warner’s departure after a solid fifty, Pant’s gritty fifty steered Delhi past 190.
Matheesha Pathirana starred for CSK with three crucial wickets, supported by Tushar Deshpande’s economical bowling. However, inconsistencies from Chahar, Rahman, and Jadeja allowed Delhi to set a challenging target.
Chennai’s chase faltered early as Gaikwad and Ravindra struggled against Delhi’s bowling. Although Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell stabilized the innings, quick wickets hindered their progress. A late onslaught from MS Dhoni showcased his vintage brilliance but couldn’t rescue Chennai as they fell short by 20 runs. Chennai’s defeat leaves only Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals as unbeaten teams in the tournament.
