With a 6-run victory, Gujarat Titans under Gill’s captaincy started their IPL campaign with a win, while Mumbai Indians continued their streak of losing their 12th consecutive opening match.
In his debut as Mumbai Indians’ captain, Hardik Pandya faced a challenging start as the team succumbed to a six-run loss against Gujarat Titans, marking MI’s 12th consecutive IPL opening match defeat. Early dismissals of Ishan Kishan and Naman Dhir by Azmatullah Omarzai put MI under pressure, but Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis staged a strong partnership. Although Rohit’s departure at 43 off 29 was a setback, Brevis continued to push MI’s score. However, Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma’s tight bowling restricted MI’s run flow, leading to Brevis’ dismissal at 46 off 38.
Earlier, Pandya opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Despite Gujarat Titans appearing set for a 200-plus total, Bumrah’s masterful bowling contained them to 168/6. Pandya initiated MI’s attack, conceding 11 runs in his first over and surprisingly returning for the third.
Bumrah’s entry proved pivotal as he struck early, dismissing Wriddhiman Saha with a yorker. Spinners Chawla and Mulani further hindered GT, with Chawla removing skipper Shubman Gill. GT rallied through Sudharsan’s resilient 45 off 39, aided by contributions from Omarzai and Miller. However, Bumrah’s re-entry in the 17th over turned the tide, removing both Miller and Sudharsan to dent GT’s innings.
