In their IPL 2024 opener, the Punjab Kings secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals in the last over.
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) clinched a thrilling four-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC) in their opening match of the IPL 2024 season at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mohali on March 23rd.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, PBKS bowlers made early inroads into the DC batting order. However, a solid partnership between David Warner (29 runs) and Mitchell Marsh (20 runs) provided some stability for the Delhi Capitals. The dismissal of Marsh by Arshdeep Singh proved crucial, as the DC middle order failed to capitalize on the strong start.
Only a defiant knock of 32 runs by impact player Abhishek Porel offered some resistance. On the bowling side, Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel scalped two wickets each for PBKS. DC eventually finished their innings with a challenging total of 174 runs on the board.
Chasing a demanding target, Dhawan and Co. had a shaky start, losing two wickets within the third over to Ishant Sharma’s bowling. However, a brilliant display by man of the match Sam Curran (63 runs) strengthened Punjab’s momentum. Curran anchored the chase with a well-composed knock, laying the foundation for the middle order to build upon.
Liam Livingstone (38) took over after Curran’s dismissal, finishing the match in style with Harpreet Brar. Despite a brief scare in the 18th over with wickets falling in quick succession, PBKS held on to secure victory with four balls and four wickets to spare. Khaleel Ahmed and Kuldeep Yadav proved to be crucial bowlers for DC, claiming two wickets each.
