IPL Franchises Unhappy With New RTM Rule

Several IPL franchises raised concerns over the revised RTM rule, arguing it unfairly favoured the highest bidder and distorted player market value.

In a recent development, several IPL franchises have raised concerns about the newly introduced Right to Match (RTM) rule for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. As reported by Cricbuzz, the teams argue that the new clause favours the highest bidder, which undermines the core purpose of the RTM card—establishing a player’s true market value.

The IPL Governing Council, in its latest auction guidelines, has set the maximum retention limit, including RTM cards, at six players. Under the revised RTM rule, the highest bidder will have one final opportunity to increase their bid before the team with the RTM card can exercise their right. This allows the highest bidder to raise their offer by any amount, which the RTM-holding team must match to retain the player.

However, many franchises are unhappy with this clause. They argue that allowing the highest bidder to raise the bid inflates the player’s final retention cost, distorting the market value that the RTM process is meant to establish. Critics believe this rule could result in unnecessary price inflation, giving an unfair advantage to the highest bidder.

Franchises Reportedly Wrote To BCCI To Re-consider the Rules

Some franchises have formally written to the BCCI to reconsider the rule, while others are engaging with IPL officials to address the issue. The franchises are concerned that this provision contradicts the BCCI’s broader goal of encouraging more star players to enter the auction.

In another significant update, the IPL Governing Council has allowed Indian players who last played international cricket five years ago to be retained in the uncapped category. This rule is seen as a nod to players like MS Dhoni, who, at 43, may return to represent CSK under this provision.
