Franchises lobbied the BCCI for more player retentions and a return of the RTM card system for the upcoming IPL seasons.
With the mega IPL player auction approaching later in 2024, the BCCI is finalising the player retention policy for the next three seasons. Franchises have expressed a desire for increased player retention rights compared to the previously allowed four players per team.
According to Cricbuzz, franchise opinions vary. A majority have requested more retentions, while others have proposed alternative approaches. The BCCI will make a final decision during a meeting with team owners later this month.
Hemang Amin, the IPL’s Chief Operating Officer, has reportedly consulted with franchise CEOs regarding their views on player retention policies and salary caps for the coming seasons. The mega-auction for the IPL 2025 presents an opportunity for teams to potentially rebuild their squads. Top teams will likely aim to retain their core players, while others might seek a complete overhaul.

Similar to the 2021 season, the BCCI is considering reintroducing the right-to-match (RTM) card system. This gives a franchise the option to match the highest bid for a player they previously owned. Notably, the RTM card was not used in the 2022 season.
Reports suggested that most franchises have requested between five and seven player retentions, with one team even proposing eight. However, some franchises have opposed the retention policy altogether, favouring an RTM-only system or no restrictions.
