Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts on Mitchell Starc’s IPL 2024 season, anticipating the Australian pace bowler to replicate his international success.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir expressed high hopes for Australian pace bowler Mitchell Starc. KKR got Starc in the 2018 auction, but he missed the season due to a leg fracture. This year, they acquired him for a record-breaking ₹24.75 crores at the mini-auction in Dubai. With the Aussie pacer set to start the season, Gambhir shared his thoughts, calling Starc an “X-factor” player for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
“I had already said on the auction table that he [Starc] is an X-factor, and I am sure he is going to deliver. And there’s no such pressure of a price tag. I hope that what he has done in international cricket, he can do the same for KKR,” the former KKR skipper was quoted as
saying in press releases upon his arrival in Kolkata.
Gautam Gambhir also took to social media recently to announce his intention to step away from politics to prioritise his cricket commitments. With a notable history with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise, where he led the team to victory in the IPL in 2012 and 2014, Gambhir’s decision to join KKR as a mentor for the upcoming IPL season comes as no surprise.
Gambhir expressed his deep connection to the franchise, stating, “KKR is not a franchise, it’s an emotion for me. I hope I live up to the expectation, and I am sure we’ll try and make Kolkata proud and that’s what we are going to do.”
Gambhir’s optimism highlighted the high expectations placed on the Australian fast bowler. Cricket fans will be eager to see if Starc as well as coach Gambhir can deliver their promised performances. The 34-year-old will be seen playing under Gambhir’s guidance for the Kolkata Knight Riders against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23rd.
