Harshit Rana was fined for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct with an aggressive celebration during the KKR vs SRH match.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Harshit Rana was penalised for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during their match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 23rd at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Rana’s aggressive celebration after dismissing SRH opener Mayank Agarwal in the sixth over caused him the penalty. Replays showed Rana blowing a flying kiss in Agarwal’s direction as the batter returned to the pavilion. This act drew criticism from many, including legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who opined that such behaviour was unnecessary.

Rana’s fiery behaviour resulted in a 60% fine of his match fees. The young bowler committed two Level 1 offences under Article 2.5 of the Code, which says, “using language, actions, or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his or her dismissal during a match.” He accepted responsibility for his actions and the match referees sanctioned a 10% and 50% fine for the respective offences.

However, the match between KKR and SRH itself was a thriller. KKR posted a formidable total of 208 runs on the scoreboard, thanks largely to Andre Russell’s explosive knock of 64 runs off just 25 deliveries. Phil Salt also scored a valuable 54 at the top of the order, driving KKR past the 200-run mark.

SRH put up a valiant chase, spearheaded by Heinrich Klaasen’s brilliant 63 runs off 29 balls. However, they ultimately fell short by just four runs. Notably, Mitchell Starc’s 19th over proved expensive for KKR, with several sixes conceded. However, Harshit Rana displayed composure in the final over, taking down both Klaasen and Ahmed and securing a thrilling victory for Kolkata.
