Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami offered encouragement and advice to Shubman Gill ahead of his captaincy role with the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024.

Veterinary pacer Mohammed Shami recently spoke on the role of captaincy assigned to Shubman Gill for the Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

With all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s sudden departure to the Mumbai Indians, the Titans made the surprise decision to appoint the young prodigy, Gill, as their captain. Shami, who will miss the tournament due to injury, shared his thoughts on Gill’s leadership role, offering both acknowledgement of the unexpected responsibility and advice on handling the pressure.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Shami acknowledged the unexpected timing of Gill’s captaincy and said, “As you said (the anchor suggested that captaincy came early for Gill), the captaincy came early, and he wouldn’t have expected it; I feel the same. But you had to take the responsibility one day. You have been performing well in past seasons and producing good performances in international cricket, too.”

Shami’s message to Gill focused on staying calm and prioritising team balance. He emphasised the importance of managing the pressure: “You don’t have to take too much load over the captaincy; just be normal and have patience. The more you stay calm, the better it will be. You have the responsibility now; you can’t say no. Just focus on your skills and how you can balance your team,” added Shami.

In a recent video uploaded by the Titans’ official social media handles, Gill spoke to the fans, addressing his new role as the captain: “As your captain, I can’t wait to experience this IPL season with all of you. As we start this new season, a new beginning. I assure you that the GT way remains the same. We believe in our group, and we will do it for you.”

Gill’s leadership skills will be put to the test right away as the Titans host their season opener against the Mumbai Indians on March 24th.
