Murali Kartik faced backlash for his controversial comment on pacer Yash Dayal during the match between RCB and PBKS, prompting RCB to defend their player with a supportive social media post.
Former Indian cricketer and current commentator Murali Kartik sparked controversy during the IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) with a displeasing remark on young pacer Yash Dayal.
The incident occurred after RCB’s win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Dayal, who was bought by RCB for ₹5 crore in the IPL auction, impressed with an economical spell of 1/23 in his four overs, including the crucial wicket of Punjab’s all-rounder, Sam Curran.
However, Kartik’s on-air comment referring to Dayal as “someone’s trash is someone’s treasure” drew widespread criticism. This was seen as a reference to Dayal’s release by the Gujarat Titans (GT) after a disappointing IPL 2023 season, where he was hit for five consecutive sixes in a match by Kolkata Knight Riders’ batter Rinku Singh. The social media backlash against Kartik was swift and harsh, with many fans calling his comment disrespectful and dismissive of Dayal’s talent.
Backing their player against Kartik’s criticism, the franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, itself took to social media and posted for Yash with the caption “He’s a treasure.” Period.”
RCB had previously faced criticism for their decision to buy Dayal, considering his poor performance in the IPL 2023. However, Dayal’s start to IPL 2024 with RCB has been promising. He bagged two wickets in two matches at a much better economy rate compared to his previous season.
Having played 16 matches with 15 wickets in his bag, the left-handed pacer will look forward to adding more to his stats as he will be seen facing the Kolkata Knight Riders next on March 29th in Bengaluru.
