During a grand jersey launch event at Chandigarh, Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan expressed that the team’s new stadium and jersey might be their lucky charm for IPL 2024.
The Punjab Kings unveiled their new matchday jersey for the upcoming IPL 2024 season at a grand event in Chandigarh. The launch ceremony was attended by several celebrities, including Punjab Kings co-owner Preity G. Zinta.
Speaking at the event, Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan expressed his hope that the team’s new stadium in Mullanpur, located in Tira, Punjab, will be a lucky charm for their IPL 2024 campaign.
“The new stadium will be our lucky charm. We are trying to think positively. We are very grateful to Mohali, and we thank the Mohali stadium and its groundsmen,” said Dhawan.
While acknowledging the new stadium as their potential fortune-turner, the left-handed batter also talked about the new jersey and the positivity they receive from it.
“The new jersey has new details and everyday is a new day and you come up with new ideas. We always look forward to positive vibes ahead of the tournament,” he added.
The Kings have historically underperformed in the IPL, reaching the semifinals only twice (2008 and 2014) and finishing runners-up just once. Yet, Dhawan’s optimism comes amidst a season where some key players from other franchises will be unavailable. The Punjab Kings, however, are expected to have a full squad for the first half of the tournament.
Their fortunes in the later stages might be impacted by the national commitments of their English players—Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Chris Woakes—who could miss the second half of the IPL to prepare for the T20I series against Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup.
The Punjab Kings will start their IPL 2024 campaign by facing the Delhi Capitals on March 23rd at 3:30 p.m. IST.
