Ashish Nehra expressed confidence in Shubman Gill’s leadership and maturity, highlighting the franchise’s faith in Gill’s capabilities as they appointed him captain of Gujarat Titans.
Shubman Gill has emerged as a vital figure in Indian cricket and globally, showcasing exceptional form in 2023 as an opener. His consistent performances throughout the year led him to become India’s top run-scorer. Ashish Nehra, coach of Gujarat Titans, praised Gill’s maturity and leadership qualities, expressing faith in his abilities.
Following the departure of Hardik Pandya, the team’s previous winning captain, to Mumbai Indians, the franchise entrusted Gill with the captaincy. Nehra highlighted Gill’s growth over three years and his commendable composure, emphasizing their unwavering belief in Gill’s potential to lead the team.
“We have seen how Shubman Gill has been playing for three-four years and how he has shaped up. He is 24-25 but he has a good head on his shoulders… We believe in him, there’s no doubt about it and that’s why we have made him the captain. I am not someone who will always go by results… When it comes to captaincy, you must see different things. We are very confident that Shubman Gill is the right guy,” said Nehra to reporters.
In the pursuit of bolstering their squad, Gujarat Titans aimed for the services of Mitchell Starc in the IPL 2024 auction. Despite losing the bidding war to Kolkata Knight Riders for Starc, Titans didn’t lose heart. They strategically secured Spencer Johnson, an Australian left-arm pace sensation, as an alternative. Nehra, acknowledging Starc’s prowess, mentioned that every team operates differently in the auction, and Titans were content with their pick.
Every team has an option of ‘if not this, then that’, and it goes on. At times, you may have five options, but even that you won’t get between the ten teams. I think we have covered all bases and are pretty much very happy. There are 10 teams and you can’t get what you exactly want or what is your first choice,” Nehra concluded.
