Steve Smith praised Pat Cummins’ leadership skills and expressed confidence in his ability to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 season.
In a recent interview, Steve Smith expressed his confidence in Pat Cummins’ leadership abilities, particularly in his new role as captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Smith, a veteran Australian cricketer, emphasised Cummins’ track record of excelling as a leader, citing his achievements as the captain of the Australian cricket team.
Reflecting on SRH’s performance in the previous IPL season under captain Aiden Markram, Smith expressed optimism about Cummins’ ability to turn the team’s fortunes around. “I think he’ll do a great job for Hyderabad while working with Daniel Vettori (SRH head coach). They’ve got a great rapport, as they had worked together in Australia when Dan was the assistant coach. And, yeah, he seems to play extremely well when he’s got a leadership role as well. So, I am looking forward to seeing how Hyderabad fares this year,” Smith was quoted as saying in a PTI release.
Cummins himself has acknowledged the challenges faced by the Australian team and their ability to overcome difficult situations, as demonstrated by their recent Test series win against New Zealand. “At times, we haven’t played our best cricket, but still found a way to win. It’s similar to the ODI World Cup. You keep finding a way to win even if at times it’s not fully functioning, the whole unit.” Cummins said. Even though they have faced challenges, Cummins has made his team tough and determined, encouraging individual players to step up when needed.
With the 30-year-old leading, SRH aims to utilise his leadership skills to achieve better results in IPL 2024. The team’s opening match will be against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on March 23rd, marking the third game of the IPL 2024 tournament.
