Sunil Gavaskar reacted to the hearty union of Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli during the KKR vs. RCB match in the IPL.

The rift between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir has been known for a long time. However, a heartwarming moment unfolded during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday, March 29th. Kohli and Gambhir were seen embracing during a strategic timeout in the RCB’s innings. However, the legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar commented cryptically on this union.

The hug and the laugh garnered significant attention, considering the history between the two players. Kohli and Gambhir have had their fair share of heated exchanges over the years, with the most recent one occurring last season when Gambhir mentored the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Reacting to the unexpected display of sportsmanship, commentator Ravi Shastri not only lauded their actions, suggesting they deserved a Fair Play award but also took things a step further by adding a touch of humour to the situation. “Not only a Fair Play award; they should be given an Oscar,” Gavaskar quipped, drawing laughter from the commentary box.

However, KKR had the last laugh in the match. Though Virat Kohli continued his impressive batting form, scoring an unbeaten 83, the other batters lacked, putting up a total of 182 runs on the board. Gavaskar also remarked about RCB’s overall performance while lauding Kohli: “You tell me how much Kohli will do alone? Someone should accompany him. If someone had supported him today, he would definitely have scored 120 instead of 83, so this is a team sport, not a single-man game; he didn’t get any support today.”

Consequently, the target proved to be insufficient as the KKR openers, Philip Salt and Sunil Narine, tore into the RCB bowling attack, amassing a mammoth 85 runs in the powerplay itself. Subsequently, KKR chased down the target with seven wickets remaining, handing RCB their first home defeat of the season.

RCB and KKR will next face each other on April 21st at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
