Ishan Kishan sidelined, Akash Deep rested In Duleep Trophy

Ishan Kishan to Feature in India A's Tests Against Australia A

Ishan Kishan missed East Zone’s opening Duleep Trophy match after failing to recover fully from a minor injury suffered in the UK during his stint with Nottinghamshire.

East Zone suffered a setback ahead of their Duleep Trophy campaign as Ishan Kishan was ruled out of the season opener. Odisha’s Aashirwad Swain has been named as his replacement in the squad. According to ESPNcricinfo, Kishan sustained the injury after falling off an e-bike during his time in the UK and required multiple stitches. Due to this, he was not considered as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant in the fifth Test against England at The Oval. Instead, Tamil Nadu’s N Jagadeesan was flown in as back-up to Dhruv Jurel.

Kishan’s injury is not considered serious, but the decision to rest him has been taken as a precaution. He is expected to be in contention for the India A squad that will play two four-day games against Australia next month. For now, Kishan will continue rehabilitation and undergo a fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. In his absence, Jharkhand’s Kumar Kushagra is likely to be the first-choice wicketkeeper for East Zone.

Akash Deep advised rest

India pacer Akash Deep will also miss the tournament, as he has been advised rest. While the exact nature of his injury or niggle remains unclear, his fitness assessment is scheduled for a later date.

Akash recently toured England with the Indian Test side, missing the fourth Test in Manchester due to a back niggle before returning for the final match, where he scored his maiden half-century as a nightwatcher in the second innings. He finished the series with 13 wickets in three Tests, including a match-winning ten-wicket haul in Birmingham. Assam’s Mukhtar Hussain has been named as his replacement in the squad led by Abhimanyu Easwaran.

East Zone will begin their campaign against North Zone, led by Shubman Gill, in the quarterfinal starting August 28. All matches will be played at the CoE in Bengaluru.

India and Assam allrounder Riyan Parag has been named Easwaran’s deputy. The squad also features Mohammed Shami, who has played just one first-class game in the last two years, and Mukesh Kumar.
