Veteran Pacer Surprises With Entry
James Anderson, at 42, entered the IPL auction for the first time in his career after retiring from international cricket earlier this year.
James Anderson, the legendary English pacer, made headlines by entering the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction at 42. This move marks his first-ever registration for the tournament across its 18 seasons. Anderson, who retired from international cricket in July with 704 Test wickets, has set his base price at INR 1.25 crore.
Despite his extensive cricket career, Anderson has never played in any global franchise T20 league. His last T20 appearance was in 2014 for Lancashire. In total, Anderson has featured in 44 T20 matches, including 19 for England, taking 41 wickets.
Notably, the IPL 2025 auction will see 1,574 registered players competing for 204 available slots. Of these, 1,165 players are from India, and 409 are overseas cricketers. The final auction list will be narrowed down by the ten franchises before the event in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.
Anderson Joins Hands With 52 Other English Players
Anderson is among 52 English players who have signed up, including Jofra Archer, who aims for a comeback after an injury-hit stint with the Mumbai Indians. However, England Test captain Ben Stokes has opted out of this year’s auction and will also be ineligible for IPL 2026 due to the league’s new registration rules.

The IPL recently introduced a rule stating that overseas players who pull out after being signed by a franchise will face a two-year ban. Notably, none of the English players were retained during the IPL 2025 retentions on October 31, with star players like Jos Buttler being released by the Rajasthan Royals.
