James Anderson is set to retire this summer in England after Brendon McCullum reportedly personally informed him during a visit, signaling England’s intent to plan for the future.
Veteran English cricketer James Anderson is gearing up to bid farewell to the sport later this year following a personal conversation with England’s head coach Brendon McCullum. According to reports from The Guardian, McCullum, who traveled from New Zealand to the UK for the meeting, shared with Anderson the team’s strategy of building for the future, signaling the end of Anderson’s illustrious career.
Having made his international debut nearly two decades ago in December 2002, Anderson has solidified his place as one of cricket’s greatest pacers. With an impressive tally of 987 wickets across 400 international matches, he ranks third overall behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne in the list of highest wicket-takers in international cricket.
During England’s recent tour of India, the 41-year-old achieved a remarkable milestone by claiming his 700th Test wicket, becoming the first pacer to reach this feat. Looking ahead, it’s anticipated that England will focus on nurturing a new seam attack in preparation for the upcoming Ashes series in the winter of 2025-26.
England is gearing up for a busy cricket schedule, with three Tests against West Indies in July followed by three more against Sri Lanka in August. The first Test against Sri Lanka, scheduled at Anderson’s home ground, Old Trafford, could mark his farewell from the sport.
Despite a challenging series against India earlier this year, where England faced a 1-4 defeat, Anderson managed to claim 10 wickets at an average of 33.50. When questioned about Anderson’s future, coach McCullum remained uncertain about his participation in the next Ashes tour but emphasized the importance of utilizing Anderson’s vast experience while he’s still part of the team. McCullum also highlighted Anderson’s invaluable role as a mentor for younger players.
