Jasprit Bumrah confirmed his availability for Asia Cup selection, with India set to travel early to the UAE for preparations.

India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has made himself available for the upcoming Asia Cup in Dubai, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source confirmed. The Indian Express reported that Bumrah had spoken to the selectors a few days ago and informed them about his readiness to play.

The senior selection committee, headed by former all-rounder Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to meet on August 19 in Mumbai to finalise India’s 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, which will be played in the T20 format from September 9 to 28 in the UAE.

“Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for Asia Cup selection. The selection committee will meet and discuss it when they meet next week,” the source said.

Bumrah was released from the Test squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval, with the management keeping his workload in mind.

He featured in the first Test at Headingley, skipped the second Test at Edgbaston (which India won), and returned for the third and fourth Tests at Lord’s and Old Trafford. During the series, he bowled 119.4 overs and claimed two five-wicket hauls.

With the Asia Cup being played in the T20I format, Bumrah will not be required to bowl long spells. The team management is also expected to rotate him if needed. Importantly, Bumrah will enjoy a gap of nearly 40 days between his last Test in England and the start of the Asia Cup.

His last T20I outing came in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Bridgetown, where India lifted the trophy after a seven-run win. Bumrah played a crucial role, finishing with figures of 2 for 18.

The Indian squad is expected to travel early to the UAE for the Asia Cup. Most players will not have any match practice games ahead of the tournament. The BCCI had asked the team management if they preferred a short camp in Bengaluru, but the management opted to travel early to adapt to conditions. “Instead of having a camp here, the team will fly three-four days early so that they can get decent practice before the tournament starts,” the source said.
