Former England cricketer Ian Bell opined that England would be happy if Jasprit Bumrah plays only three Tests.
Former England cricketer Ian Bell expressed surprise over India’s decision to limit Jasprit Bumrah to just three Tests in the ongoing five-match series. Bell said England would benefit if Bumrah misses any games, given his match-winning ability.
The plan to rest Bumrah was confirmed by India head coach Gautam Gambhir after the first Test. Bell believes that if Bumrah is fully fit and the series remains competitive, he must be part of the playing XI.
“I’d be amazed if he only plays three Tests this summer. He’s the best fast bowler in the world, and if he doesn’t play, England will be very, very happy. Of course, you want to protect him, but if the series is on the line and he’s fit, he has to play,” Bell was quoted by India Today.
The former cricketer also shared his thoughts on India’s spin options, backing Kuldeep Yadav as a more attacking choice than Washington Sundar.
“Kuldeep is bowling beautifully. Someone who can spin it both ways is always a threat – especially to England’s lower order. India will need to decide whether they want someone like Washington Sundar who can assist Ravindra Jadeja, or get Kuldeep Yadav, who is a much better wicket-taking option,” he added.
Jasprit Bumrah Rested for 2nd Test, Akash Deep In
Meanwhile, England opted to bowl first after winning the toss under overcast skies on Day 1 of the second Test at Edgbaston. England named an unchanged XI. India, trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, made three changes to their XI. Bumrah was rested to manage his workload and replaced by Akash Deep. Shardul Thakur and Sai Sudharsan were also left out, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar coming into the side.
