Former India coach Bharat Arun believes Jasprit Bumrah and other key bowlers should skip the IPL to stay fit for major international series.
Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has raised concerns over the workload of Jasprit Bumrah and other fast bowlers, suggesting they should consider skipping the IPL to remain fit for crucial international assignments. He stressed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) must take the lead in ensuring such decisions, while players would also need fair compensation if asked to sit out. Arun believes reducing IPL workload can extend careers of India’s leading bowlers.
“Definitely, this (resting players during IPL) would help,” Arun told The Times of India.
“Especially when you want to preserve bowlers. Like, it’s okay for a batter or a spinner to play all formats. But for a fast bowler, yes — playing too much cricket doesn’t give enough time to work on the physical front. So yes, this definitely can be looked into. People like Bumrah or any other bowler we feel is very important for a particular series can be rested, and they can also be adequately compensated,” he continued.
“If he’s properly compensated and then told by the BCCI, because he’s on contract, that we want you to work on this particular aspect of your game, I think that’s fair enough,” Arun added.

Bumrah’s fitness has been in the spotlight since he suffered a back injury in January. He returned during the IPL, where he played 12 matches for Mumbai Indians, who reached the second Qualifier. With the season extended due to cross-border tensions, India’s England Test series followed soon after, forcing Bumrah to play only three of five Tests as planned. He missed the series decider but is now set for the Asia Cup 2025 in September.
